How 3D Printing Is Helping Penguins In Captivity
What do penguins, middle schoolers, and 3D printers have in common? A lot more than you would guess!
In this heartwarming video, you’ll see first hand how Connecticut-based Mystic Aquarium teamed up with 3D Systems to help one of their injured penguins. “Purps” the Penguin is now able to easily walk around the sanctuary with much less discomfort thanks to the support of his custom 3D printed boot.
This product brought a unique challenge to the team. The penguin boot was traditionally molded by hand in a very time intensive process. In addition, it was heavy and bulky causing additional stress on the injured penguin. Together, they decided to use the 3D Systems ProJet 5000 technology to take advantage multi-material printing to make a boot with the goal of a better fitting, lighter weight and less bulky boot.
